she stabs some new holes in her belt,
recklessly waifish and full of wonder and fear of the world,
a windblown sparrow lost kicking in the jetstream.
the past is the future is gone,
a million miles walking til her shoes melt.
memories flood through her curls -
fly north, summer months, to snow-filled apartment.

days awake, she waits for her girl to come back.
lying there, she's listening to all the tapes play back.

her girl collects pelts for her wall,
big boots kicking dirt and road salt.
she eagerly waits for her call -
apology stuttered like emotional abuse makes.
well she's been up hoping all fall,
gnawing on her prey like a jackal,
but bird did the right thing in spring -
snow melt breakup sent her soaring on her sparrow's wings.

alive, alone, curious, and thriving.
happily flying.

she's there watching jackal gnashing at her own sharpened teeth.
